How can I tell if I have a 64 bit processor or if I have a 32 bit processer.?
March 25th, 2010 | by admin |I am looking to upgrade to Windows Vista and when I use the Windows Marketplace Upgrade Tool it keeps sending me to the Windows Vista 64 bit editions. Currently I am using a Celeron 2.93ghz processer and I am aware that they come in both the 64 and 32 bit editions.
Any help on software or where to look in Windows XP to find out this info would be great.
Well it depends on the processor that you are using. You can use Sandra Lite to check it. You can download it at www.download.com. It is a diagnostic utility that will gather information from your computer and tell you what it is. Run a system check and look through it. It should tell you exactly what your system should be able to run. I haven’t seen anything about Celerons coming in 64-bit, just 32-bit.
If you do have a 64-bit processor, then you can use a 64-bit operating system. It runs smoothly, but the only problem with that is that you may have problems with some of your hardware drivers (For example, your printer may not work anymore). You would have to look in the manufacturer’s website to see if you can find any 64-bit drivers.
One more thing, since you are looking to upgrade to Vista, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND waiting 6 months or more because since it is a new operating system, it may have lots of bugs/security holes (since Microsoft never finishes their product). That’s what happened with XP; that’s why XP constantly had updates – they were patching up the holes in the software.

Most are 32. The new 64 bit is very rarely needed – and there aren’t even many or if any – programs out supporting it, such as in gaming.
