Games for Windows Marketplace Client crashes on startup?
March 14th, 2011 | by admin |Tonight I saw an incredible deal on the Windows Marketplace – Age of Empires III for 10 cents. I bought it, but then had to download the client to install the game. I had never used this before since I use (clearly far superior) Steam. I installed it but as soon as I get past the initial screen it says "Games for Windows has stopped working" and crashes. Goddamn Microsoft sucks so much…anyone able to fix this problem?
Download Net Framework 4.0 and install it should work after that and make sure you have the hotfix if you are on xp.

I picked up Bioshock for $2 yesterday and AoE III for $0.10 today and haven’t been able to download either before it crashes. If I find something, I’ll let you know. BTW, when I installed the client, it suggested install a HotFix, which I did. I’m going to try to uninstall that and see if it fixes it. Did anyone else install the HF?
Update: Installed .NET 4.0 and it seems to be downloading just fine! As an admittedly stupid alternative, you could download the game for a few minutes, pause and close the client, then open it and resume and continue doing that until the game is downloaded…

I also saw and bought the Age of Empires III for 10 cents and also had the same client issue where i try to start windows marketplace but then that pop up window shows up and says Games for Windows Live has stopped running. After reading some past forums one person recommend downloading Microsoft.Net Framework (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=9cfb2d51-5ff4-4491-b0e5-b386f32c0992). I downloaded the most recent version thats out and windows live stopped sucking and im now currently downloading the game. Hopefully this helps for you guys.

I was having the same problem. Got through to tech support after a 45 min wait and the issue was resolved by installing an optional windows update to install windows live essentials. Apparently GFWL’s install client can think you have one component of it which is required when you really don’t.
