Walking distance from hotel?
August 22nd, 2011 | by admin |I will be staying at the Hilton Hawaiian Village and will not have a car during my stay. I would like to visit Diamond Head, Wal-mart, Target, Ala Moana Mall, Ala Moana Beach, International Marketplace, Aloha Tower, Royal Hawaiian Center, and the Ward Center. I will be mostly walking but if anyone knows of a good trolley service that will stop at any of those places let me know. From my hotel, try to estimate how long it will take to walk to the above destinations.
There are Targets and Wal-Marts in or near almost any community in the US and they all look pretty much the same – why would you want to waste your limited time in beautiful Hawaii going to a cheap and cheesy chain store that you can see anywhere?

You’re not going to enjoy walking to all these places, especially Ward Center and Aloha Tower (3 miles each way from the Hilton along busy Ala Moana Blvd). Target? Really? … the closest one will take you right in the middle of downtown and rows of homeless tents … not the safest place for a tourist to wander on foot.
Check with the concierge, they may have a shuttle service and will definitely give you the best walking map for Waikiki and the bus stop to get you to Aloha Tower.

Honolulu has a pretty good bus system.
Go to http://www.thebus.org for information.
By the way, Ala Moana Mall is about a mile west of the Hawaiian Village Hotel, and the International Marketplace and Royal Hawaiian Center are about a half mile east of the Hawaiian Village.

Diamond Head- Around an hour. (I wouldnt suggest walking there if you are going to walk up).
Wal-mart/Target- Not really within walking distance.
Ala Moana Mall/Beach- 10-20 minutes depending on how fast you are.
Royal Hawaiian- 20-30 minutes.
Ward Center- 20-30 minutes.
International marketplace- 10-20 minutes
Luckily, you can always get TheBus everywhere, it’s $2.50 for anydestination, and you can get return slips for within 3 or so hours!
good luck! aloha

Aloha from Maui,
I would suggest with all you want to do that you rent a car for the day.
There is a couple of car companies right in Waikiki.
Anything that is in Waikiki or Honolulu is going to be fairly easy to do by bus. But Wal-Mart, Target, the outlet malls are going to take you hours to do by bus.
Hopefully you have your transportation already arranged to get you from the airport to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. A taxi will run you around $30 or so each way.

You can use the bus system at the worst for all that.
You can get on Google Maps and figure out your distances, and even your bus route options and durations.
Wal-Mart, Target, Ward Center, and Aloha Tower are all probably farther than you’d want to walk. They’re not impossible, but they’ll probably take more time than you want playing tourist. Just take the bus instead for those.

Well, as many have already informed you, TheBus is one option and the most affordable, next to hoofing it.
However, if you want some alternative modes of transport that might serve your needs a little better, you can try the newest addition to Waikiki and that is the Double-Decker Open-Roof AlohaBus that shuttles to many of the places you’ve listed. You get a pass for 1 or multiple days and you can get on and off at your leisure as often as you choose. http://www.myhawaiifoodfun.com/myhawaiionline-blog/the-new-honolulu-double-decker-alohabus/
There is also the Waikiki Trolley (no, its not your typical "trolley" that runs on rails, its just the name they took. Similar to the AlohaBus with a few more options for destinations and such.

If nothing else, take a look at the places that these two shuttles go to and it will give you a better idea of other places you might want to visit. About the only places on your list that you probably would not want to walk to would be Diamond Head, Target, the Aloha Tower and possibly, Ward Center.
The rest are less than a half-hour’s walk from the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The International Marketplace and royal Hawaiian Center are both located closer to the other end of Waikiki, which would be about a 2 mile walk. Ala Moana Beach, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and Wal-Mart are lined up from the ocean (makai) towards the mountains (mauka). The beach and shopping center are probably a mile from HHV.
While I do not wish to dissuade you from walking in Hawaii, I would be amiss if I did not at least suggest you not walk alone late at night. It is unfortunate, but crime does exist in Honolulu and especially if you are a tourist. So, keep that in mind.

Get a car. If you don’t, you’ll waste a ton of time on The Bus. You can get anywhere on the Bus but it will take a long time. Here are your estimations:
1. Diamond Head – 40 minute walk up a big hill to get to the trailhead.
2. Wal-mart – 2 hours. There’s one by the airport and one in Hawaii Kai. Taking a cab will be about 30 bucks one way and the bus will take forever.
3. Ala Moana Mall/Beach Park – This is 2nd closest place. Both will be about 15 minutes, you’re right on top of them.
4. International Marketplace – 10 minutes. But you’ll burn out of if after 20 minutes of looking. It’s not as good as the marketing and ads say it is.
5. Aloha Tower – 1.5 hours. It’s a long way and a cab should be a little less than 25 bucks. The bus will get you there and there are free shuttles that pick up at stops along Waikiki (On Kalakaua and Kuhio). It’ll still take 30 minutes by shuttle.
6 Ward Center – Again, about an hour walk. It’s a few miles away.
The whole time you’re walking you’re going to be in some weather that’s bad for exercise. Think sweaty, stinky, and humid 82 degree temps. I suggest getting a car and paying for parking. You’ll save a ton of time.
Good luck!

These are the like in Hawaii…
= Take a whale-watching catamaran cruise
Each winter, the humpback whales leave their rich Alaskan feeding grounds to frolic, mate, birth and nurse in the warm and shallow waters surrounding the Hawaiian Islands.
= Relax on Hawaii’s world famous beaches
Hawaii boasts some of the loveliest beaches in the world. In view of majestic emerald mountains, the sapphire waters and turquoise waves of Hawaii’s best beaches await you.
= Visit the active Kilauea Volcano on the Big Island
Kilauea is located on the southeastern tip of the Big Island of Hawaii and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world!
