Ahhh, Gemco. Arizona’s original Wal-Mart. So many things put on layaway! If I remember right, we layawayed an Atari 2600 from there.

Last week, I returned to “my” old Smitty’s after 16 years. Big disappointment. Fry’s Marketplace is similar, but just not as good. No Restaurant, pizza kitchen, snack bar, barber shop, beauty salon, full service jewelry counter, optical department, clothing/shoes, firearms/ammo, photo lab, video rentals. Tiny electronics dept. Just really nothing like I remember, and nowhere near as cool of a store.

The original Smitty’s concept I remember when I was younger was more like your supercenter type of store, where they did it all, resturaunt, department and grocery. I think they even had a hair salon if remember right. They were just like the original Gemco stores.

Smitty’s stores …
Smitty’s stores were an Arizona chain back in I think late 70’s into 90’s. Then they were eventually bought by Kroeger, combined with Smith’s for a short time (both did same sales), then renamed Smitty’s to Fred Meyer, and then renamed them to Fry’s Marketplace. The original Smitty’s were the original big box type of stores with resturaunts, department store along with groceries.

Weird. We never had Smitty’s in Utah but we still had the same Fred Meyer jingle before they changed it to Smith’s Marketplace. (I know Arizona’s is now Fry’s Marketplace.)
